The best multi-cookers and electric pressure cookers for 2026

Sold on the number of programs, lived with on three of them. What separates these machines is the pressure they hold — a published figure in kPa — because that is what changes cooking times, while a "slow cook" or "yoghurt" program is a thermostat with a label. The inner pot is the second question: stainless steel or a coating, and whether a replacement is sold separately, since the pot wears out long before the base does. We also compare usable capacity against stated capacity (a pressure cooker cannot be filled to the rim, and makers publish a maximum fill line), the venting method, and whether the sealing ring is a stocked part. Cooking times and pressures reported here are the manufacturer's own; they are not turned into food-safety instructions.

The need before the model, across multi-cookers

Cooking for the whole household

A multi-cooker is only filled two-thirds under pressure. The usable volume is always less than the advertised capacity.

NATIONAL PRESTO 06009

Cooking for two

A small pot comes up to pressure faster and uses less power. A large appliance for two portions spends its time heating empty space.

Instant Pot 140-8004-01B

Still working after five years

The lid gasket and the valve are a multi-cooker's wear parts. Models whose gasket reference is published are the ones that get repaired instead of replaced.

Who buys what, across multi-cookers

Leaving a stew to simmer while you work
Pressure divides cooking times by three or four on long-cooking meats. It is the most convincing use.
Programmed cooking
Delayed start and keep-warm mean coming home to a finished meal. That is what a classic pressure cooker does not do.
Simplified cooking
Searing, simmering and keeping warm in one pot reduces the washing up. The searing is nonetheless less effective than in a pan.

Nothing is free: the trade-offs of multi-cookers

Versatility against specialization
A multi-cooker does ten things correctly and none perfectly. Searing and rice are the two most debated functions.
Programs against control
Automatic programs are reassuring and hide what is happening. Manual pressure mode gives far more mastery once understood.
Footprint against appliances replaced
It takes up a lot of countertop and potentially replaces the pressure cooker, the slow cooker and the rice cooker. The sum depends on what you already own.

Buyers’ questions on multi-cookers

How full should the pot be?

Two-thirds at most under pressure, half for foods that swell such as pulses and grains.

Is the displayed time the total time?

No. You have to add coming up to pressure and releasing it, often another fifteen minutes in total.

How does it differ from a classic pressure cooker?

The multi-cooker programs, keeps warm and watches itself; the pressure cooker reaches a higher pressure and cooks faster.

How do you release the pressure on a multi-cooker?

Naturally for meats, through the valve for vegetables you do not want to overcook. The choice genuinely changes the result.

Does the seal wear out?

Yes, it is the main wear part, to be changed every one to two years. It also holds the smells of spiced dishes.

Can I sear in it?

The function exists and runs cooler than a pan. Many people prefer to sear separately and transfer.

What if the appliance will not come up to pressure?

Check the seal, the lid position and the valve. A lack of liquid in the pot also stops pressure building.

Can it be left unattended?

That is precisely its appeal, with its built-in safety devices. Like any heating appliance, it stands on a clear surface.

What to take away from multi-cookers

The displayed time is not the real time: add coming up to pressure and releasing it. Fill to two-thirds, change the seal every one to two years, and release naturally for meat, quickly for vegetables.

The gist of multi-cookers, at a glance

  • Power: 1,000 to 1,400, on 9 of the 18 models.
  • Footprint: 230 to 457, on 8 of the 18 models.
  • Cooking surface: 8 to 9.5, on 4 of the 18 models.

A comparison of multi-cookers

The column is kept only if four appliances in five give the figure. Otherwise it would turn absence into a difference.
