Can I use parchment paper in a toaster oven?

Yes, for baking — if it is trimmed to the pan and the oven stays below the paper’s rating, usually 420 to 450 °F. Never use it under the broiler, and never use wax paper in its place.

Why a toaster oven is different from a big oven

The cavity is small and the elements are close — often an inch or two above the food, and glowing red on broil and toast. Paper that overhangs a pan and touches an element is a very different situation from paper on a sheet in a full-size oven. Trim it to the pan.

Why it is different from an air fryer

An air fryer moves air fast past a perforated basket, and a loose sheet lifts toward the element. A toaster oven has a flat pan and a slower fan or none, so paper stays where it is put — as long as something sits on it. For the air fryer case, see can I line the drawer instead of the basket.

How to use it safely

  • Cut it to the pan, with nothing hanging over the edge.
  • Bake only, within the temperature printed on the box.
  • Not on broil or toast, where the top element is red-hot and close.
  • Food on top, so the paper cannot curl up toward the element.
  • Never preheat with an empty sheet inside.

The alternative: the pan it came with

Most toaster ovens ship with a bake pan that fits the cavity exactly: the BLACK+DECKER 5-in-1 at $61.99 with a bake pan and an air fry mesh tray, the Hamilton Beach at $59.95 with a bake pan and broil rack, the Elite Gourmet 4-slice at $34.99 with a bake pan. For extra pans sized to a small oven, see the NutriChef toaster oven bakeware set.

And a note on cleaning

Paper protects the pan, not the cavity walls or the crumb tray. Empty the crumb tray after each use — crumbs on it smoke the next time the bottom element heats — and wipe the cavity while it is warm, because grease releases warm. See clearance above and behind.

Your oven’s manual has the final word on what may go in its cavity.

What readers want to know

What temperature can parchment paper take?

Most parchment is rated to about 420 to 450 °F — the box says which. A toaster oven's bake setting is usually within that; its broil and toast settings are not, because the elements glow red close to the food. At or above the rating, parchment browns, turns brittle and can char.

Is parchment paper the same as wax paper?

No. Parchment is coated with silicone and is made for the oven. Wax paper is coated with wax, which melts and can smoke or catch fire in heat — it is for wrapping and counters, never for a toaster oven or an air fryer.

Can I use foil in a toaster oven instead?

On the pan, usually yes; on the crumb tray or the oven floor, check your manual first — many toaster oven makers warn against it, because foil there can reflect heat back at the elements or trap grease against them. Never let foil touch a heating element.
