Can I bake two trays at once in a toaster oven?

Only in a tall cavity with three rack positions — and evenly only with a fan. Of the toaster ovens sold in the United States on this site, the Elite Gourmet French-door is the one built for it.

What each oven allows

Elite Gourmet French-door, $84.99 — three rack positions in a 13.25 × 13.5 × 8.95 in cavity, 1,500 W, 200 to 450 °F and a 60-minute timer. Its listing says the three positions let you “cook multiple dishes at once”. No convection fan is claimed.

Breville Mini Smart Oven, $159.95 — three rack positions, but a cavity only 4 inches high. Two trays fit on paper; with a cookie or a roll on each, there is no air between them.

Elite Gourmet 4-slice, $34.99 — two slide positions in a 9.5-quart cavity: one tray and the rack, not two trays.

Hamilton Beach, $59.95 — the only page here that says its convection circulates air, but no rack positions published.

The BLACK+DECKER and the Dash are one-tray ovens, with no rack positions published.

Why the fan decides it

Without one, the top tray sits near the top element and the bottom tray near the bottom one. The two cook differently: tops brown on the upper tray, bottoms on the lower.

With a fan, the cavity is closer to one temperature — which is the whole reason convection modes exist. Closer, not equal.

What still goes wrong

Trays that fill the cavity, blocking the air path at the sides. Leave about an inch all around.

No rotation. Even with a fan, swap the trays top to bottom and turn them front to back halfway through — a small cavity has hot spots near the door and the elements.

What the smallest ovens do instead

One tray, well, in two batches. A cookie sheet that bakes in 10 minutes takes 20 for two batches, and both come out right.

The pan question, which is separate

A quarter sheet pan is 9 × 13 inches. It fits the Elite Gourmet French-door; it does not fit a 4-slice oven. For pans that do, see the baking tins and molds page and measure before you buy.

And the crumb tray

Two trays means more that drips. Slide the crumb tray in under both, and empty it before the next bake — crumbs on a hot tray smoke.

What readers want to know

Do I need a second tray?

Yes — every toaster oven here ships with one tray. A second has to slide onto the rack and leave about an inch of air at the sides and back. Measure the rack, not the outside of the oven: the Elite Gourmet French-door publishes a 13.25 × 13.5 in cavity, the Breville Mini Smart Oven 11 × 10 in. A quarter sheet pan is 9 × 13 in.

Does convection mean I can fill both racks?

It makes two racks more even, not identical. A fan evens out the air between the top and the bottom element, but the rack nearer an element still colors first — swap the trays and turn them halfway. The Hamilton Beach is the only toaster oven here whose page says its convection circulates air; it does not publish its rack positions.

What temperature for two trays?

The recipe's temperature, with a few more minutes. Two loads take longer to heat than one. With a fan, many recipes advise 25 °F lower than a still oven. Your manual and the recipe have the final word.
