What is a rotisserie spit for in a toaster oven?

It turns a chicken or a roast slowly in front of the heat, so the fat bastes the meat as it rotates and every side browns evenly. Truss it tightly, center it on the spit, and cook to 165 °F in the thickest part.

What it does

The fat bastes the meat continuously. As the bird turns, rendered fat runs over the whole surface instead of pooling under it — so the skin crisps all round and the breast stays moist.

No side sits in its own juices. A roast on a rack has a bottom that steams; a spit has no bottom.

The heat is even, because every part of the surface passes the element in turn.

How to use it

  1. Truss the bird with kitchen twine — legs together, wings tucked.
  2. Push the spit through the center, lengthways, so it is balanced.
  3. Tighten the forks at both ends so the meat turns with the spit.
  4. Drip tray underneath, with a little water to stop fat smoking.
  5. About 375 °F, 15 to 20 minutes per pound, until 165 °F in the breast and thigh.
  6. Rest 10 minutes before carving.

Which toaster oven on this site has one

NutriChef PKRTO28, $149.99 — a 30-quart countertop oven with a rotisserie among its seven cooking styles, supplied with skewers and handles. It also has two hot plates on top: together they draw more than a standard kitchen outlet supplies, so do not run the plates while roasting — its review explains why.

No other toaster oven or air fryer on this site turns anything.

Before baking with it

Take the spit out — it fills the middle of the oven where a pan goes. See can I bake with the rotisserie fitted.

Cleaning

Soak the spit and forks in hot soapy water right after, while the fat is soft, and wipe the oven walls warm — a rotisserie spatters. See clearance above and behind for where to put a large countertop oven, and the toaster ovens page.

What readers want to know

How big a chicken fits a toaster oven rotisserie?

Usually a 3- to 4-pound chicken in a large countertop oven — it must turn without touching the elements or the walls. Measure from the spit to the top element and the floor, and check your manual's maximum weight. The NutriChef PKRTO28, the toaster oven on this site with a rotisserie, publishes no maximum roast weight.

How long does a rotisserie chicken take in a toaster oven?

About 15 to 20 minutes per pound at about 375 °F, so roughly an hour to an hour and 20 minutes for a 4-pound bird. The time is only a guide: the chicken is done at 165 °F in the thickest part of the breast and the thigh, checked with an instant-read thermometer.

Do I need to truss the chicken?

Yes. Tie the legs together and the wings against the body with kitchen twine, so nothing flops loose, drags on the tray or touches an element. Push the spit through the center of the bird and tighten the forks so it turns with the spit rather than slipping on it.
