What is a dual-zone air fryer?

An air fryer with two separate drawers, each with its own heating element and fan, so two foods cook at different temperatures and times — and finish together. It is the answer to a main and a side at once.

What it is

Two baskets side by side in one body. Each drawer has its own controls, element and fan, and runs independently. Most models add two buttons:

  • Sync or smart finish — delays the shorter drawer so both finish together.
  • Match — copies one drawer’s settings to the other, for one big batch.

What it does well

A main and a side: chicken thighs in one drawer, fries or vegetables in the other, each at its own setting.

Two batches of the same thing, without cooking twice.

Different diets at one meal — one drawer for a vegetarian option.

Where it falls short

One large item. A whole chicken, a roast or a big batch of wings does not fit in half a machine. A single large basket holds more.

Counter space. Two drawers side by side are wide.

Capacity on paper. “8 quarts” means two 4-quart drawers, and each drawer still needs a single layer — see why a single layer matters.

The alternatives

One basket, staggered — start the slower food first and add the quicker one partway through. See can you cook two things at once in an air fryer.

A basket with a removable divider, which works as one large drawer or two smaller ones.

An air-fry toaster oven, which puts two foods side by side on one wide tray at one temperature — the BLACK+DECKER 5-in-1 at $61.99 or the Hamilton Beach at $59.95.

Before buying

Measure the counter, with clearance behind and above — see does an air fryer need space around it. Check the plug: two drawers at full power draw as much as any countertop appliance, so give it its own outlet — see cable length and the socket.

Check your own manual before you follow anything here. Temperatures, fill limits and pressure ratings differ from model to model, and the manufacturer’s figures take precedence over anything written on this site. We report what makers publish — an oven’s range in degrees, a cooker’s maximum fill line, whether a part is declared dishwasher-safe — and we never turn those figures into food-safety guidance. Cooking temperatures and holding times for particular foods are set by manufacturers and by your national food safety authority, and this site points you to them rather than restating them.

What readers want to know

Is a dual-zone air fryer better than one big basket?

For two different foods, yes — chicken at 380 °F and fries at 400 °F, finishing at the same moment. For one large item, no: a whole chicken or a big batch of wings fits a single large basket better than either half of a dual-zone machine. Some models have one wide basket with a removable divider, which does both.

How do the sync and match buttons work?

Sync (often called smart finish) delays the shorter drawer so both finish together: set each drawer, press sync, and the machine starts the second drawer automatically. Match copies one drawer's settings to the other, for one large batch split across two baskets.

What size dual-zone air fryer do I need?

About 8 quarts in total — two 4-quart drawers — suits a family of three or four. Couples manage with 6 quarts; larger families look at 10. Check the footprint too: two drawers side by side are wide, so measure the counter first.
