The same principle — a fan moving heated air past the food — at a different scale. An air fryer moves it fast through a small basket right under the element; a convection oven moves it more gently through a large cavity. “Hot air” and “convection” mean the same thing.
The two words
“Hot air”, “convection” and “air fry” all describe a fan circulating heated air. “Natural convection” is different: it means air rising on its own, with no fan, and gives no crisping advantage — see what does convection do in a toaster oven.
Where they differ
| Air fryer | Convection oven | |
|---|---|---|
| Cavity | A few quarts | Large — full-size or countertop |
| Fan | Strong, close to the food | Gentler, at the back |
| Element | Directly above the basket | Top, bottom and/or behind the fan |
| Preheat | 2–5 minutes | 10–15 minutes |
| Best at | Crisping small batches fast | Baking, big roasts, full trays |
| Capacity | One layer in a basket | Several racks |
What that means in practice
For fries, wings and frozen snacks, the air fryer is faster and crisper. For a cake, a sheet-pan dinner or a large roast, the convection oven is the better tool — more room, gentler air, even heat. See air fryer vs toaster oven: which is faster.
The machine in between
An air-fry toaster oven is a small convection oven with a stronger fan and a mesh tray. The BLACK+DECKER 5-in-1 at $61.99 and the Hamilton Beach at $59.95 both air fry and bake. See the toaster ovens page.
And speed claims
Air fryer speed claims are almost always made against a regular or convection oven, on small loads that suit a basket — not against another air fryer. Read them that way.
Check your own manual before you follow anything here. Temperatures, fill limits and pressure ratings differ from model to model, and the manufacturer’s figures take precedence over anything written on this site. We report what makers publish — an oven’s range in degrees, a cooker’s maximum fill line, whether a part is declared dishwasher-safe — and we never turn those figures into food-safety guidance. Cooking temperatures and holding times for particular foods are set by manufacturers and by your national food safety authority, and this site points you to them rather than restating them.

What readers want to know
Is an air fryer just a small convection oven?
Essentially, yes — with a stronger fan, a much smaller cavity and the element right above the food. That combination crisps the surface faster and preheats in minutes. A convection oven holds far more and cooks more gently, which suits baking and large roasts.
Can a convection oven air fry?
Roughly, yes. Use the convection setting at the high end, a perforated or mesh tray so air reaches underneath, and one spread-out layer. Results are close to an air fryer for fries and wings, a little slower and less crisp. Air-fry toaster ovens such as the BLACK+DECKER 5-in-1 are built to do exactly this.
Do I convert recipes between an air fryer and a convection oven?
Usually a little. From a regular oven, both run about 25 °F lower. Between a convection oven and an air fryer, keep the temperature and expect the air fryer to finish a few minutes sooner — check early. See how to convert oven times for an air fryer.
