The parts that wear first

Almost nothing in this category breaks. Things wear, in a predictable order, and each of them is a part.

Family by family

Waffle makers and contact grills — the plate coating. Replaceable only if the plates come out: the Dash Mini Maker plates sell at $9.99 for two, and the Cuisinart Griddler waffle plates at $56.26. On a fixed-plate iron, a worn coating is a worn machine.

Pressure cookers — the sealing ring, then the inner pot. A ring costs between about $7 and $24 — the Prestige Junior at $8.94, the Presto at $19.28 — and the two rings on this site that publish an interval say every two to three years.

Blenders — the gasket under the blade, then the blade itself. A blender that has stopped crushing ice with a healthy-sounding motor has a dull blade, not a dead motor. Buy the blade the maker lists for your model number.

Stand mixers — the beaters and the splash guard, which get lost or chipped rather than worn out. A replacement set of whisk, dough hook and flat beater for a KitchenAid tilt-head costs $19.99 in the OMOVAN set, against $322.99 for the cheapest KitchenAid mixer on this site.

Raclette grills — the pans. They go missing between winters, one or two at a time, which is why they are sold in pairs and fours.

The arithmetic

A sealing ring is under $25 against a $91 pressure cooker. A pair of waffle plates is $10. A beater set is $20 against a $323 mixer. In every case the part costs a fraction of the machine, and in every case the machine is fine — see when a machine is not broken.

Buy the spare early

Availability is the thing that ages worst. A plate set for a discontinued waffle maker does not exist; one bought while the range is current costs the same and is there when it is needed.

What readers want to know

What is the single most misdiagnosed failure?

A pressure cooker that will not come up to pressure. It is a groove that needs cleaning or a ring past its wear far more often than it is a fault — and a ring costs $7 to $24 on this site's pressure cooker seals page, against $90.99 for the 4-quart Instant Pot. See cleaning a pressure cooker sealing groove.

How do I find the right part?

By number, not by photograph. The number is on the old component, in the manual, or on the rating plate under the appliance. The Presto ring names three model numbers; the Prestige Junior names its range and adds "does not work with other brands or models". See how to read a compatibility list.
