Braun CG9167 review

MultiGrill 9: three cooking positions, two independent temperature zones, a food probe, a sear function Braun states reaches 265 °C (509 °F) in minutes, and heating elements built into the plates. All plates are non-stick, removable and dishwasher-safe — and the set includes grill, flat and waffle plates.

The net of it The one that replaces two appliances. Two independent temperature zones is the specification nothing else here has — a steak and vegetables at their own temperatures, finishing together — and the waffle plates mean this grill covers a second family on this site outright. Elements inside the plates rather than under them is the quieter idea, and probably the one you notice daily. Braun still publishes neither area nor wattage, which at this price is a strange gap.

Two zones

The specification nothing else here has. Two independent electronic temperature controls mean the two halves of the plate run at different temperatures at the same time — a steak seared on one side, vegetables gentler on the other, finishing together.

It is the same idea as the dual-drawer air fryer elsewhere on this site, and it changes what one appliance can do in one sitting.

265 °C (509 °F), on a button

Braun publishes a sear function that reaches 265 °C (509 °F) in a few minutes. That is a real number on a family where most makers publish none at all: the ADE gives a dial with no degrees, the Tefal three unnamed steps. Only the Philips also publishes degrees, and its ceiling is 220 °C (428 °F).

The plates, and the waffle plates

Grill, flat and waffle — all non-stick, all removable, all dishwasher-safe. Taking waffle plates makes this the only grill on this site that covers a second family outright.

Braun also builds the heating elements into the plates rather than under them, stated for faster and more even heat. It is the least visible idea here and probably the most useful day to day.

The probe

An integrated thermometer that reads the core of the food, as on the Philips. Braun publishes the instrument; the temperatures that correspond to a given result are its own, in its manual.

What is not published

No plate area, no wattage. At this price, and against a Tefal that publishes both of its surfaces, that is the one thing to hold against it.

The plus side, and the minus

Strengths

  • Two independent temperature zones — two foods at two temperatures at once
  • Sear function stated to reach 265 °C (509 °F) in minutes
  • Grill, flat and waffle plates in the set, all removable and dishwasher-safe
  • Heating elements built into the plates, stated for faster and more even heat

Compromises

  • Three to five times the price of the other three grills here
  • Braun publishes no plate area and no wattage
  • The Spanish price is over 50% above the German one at the time of writing
  • A waffle plate on a contact grill is a compromise against a dedicated iron

What readers want to know

Does it really replace a waffle iron?

It takes waffle plates, which no other grill on this site does, and they are removable and dishwasher-safe. A dedicated iron will still make a deeper waffle — plate depth is what decides that, and Braun does not publish it here. For an occasional waffle it removes an appliance from the cupboard.

What are the two temperature zones for?

Braun publishes two independent electronic controls, so the left and right halves can run at different temperatures at the same time. It is the same idea as the dual-drawer air fryer on this site: two foods, two settings, one appliance.

A household that grills often, cooks two things at once, and would rather not own a waffle iron too.
