Usually a shake reminder at the halfway point: pull the basket, shake or flip the food, and slide it back. Other beeps mean preheating is done, cooking is done, the drawer is out, or — with a code on the display — a fault.
What each beep usually means
| When it beeps | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Halfway through | Shake or turn reminder | Shake small pieces, flip large ones |
| A few minutes after starting | Preheat finished | Add the food |
| At the end | Cooking finished | Take the food out; repeats until you do |
| When you press a button | Input confirmed | Nothing |
| With a code on the screen | Fault | Unplug, cool, check vents and drawer |
Your manual lists the exact sounds and codes — makers differ.
The halfway beep
It is a shake or turn reminder, built into many presets so food cooks evenly: the element is above the food and the air moves in one pattern, so the top and one side brown first. It does not pause anything — pulling the drawer does. What to shake and what to flip: should you shake the air fryer basket. How the feature works and how to turn it off: what is a shake reminder.
The preheat beep
Many digital models run a short preheat and beep — or show Add Food — when it ends. See how to know when an air fryer is preheated.
When it beeps with the drawer out
Some machines beep if the drawer stays out, as a reminder that the cook is paused. Slide it back fully until it clicks — see can I open an air fryer while it is cooking.
When it beeps with an error
A code on the display usually means a temperature sensor or overheating fault. Unplug it, let it cool, clear the vents — see does an air fryer need space around it — and if the code returns, stop using it. See also when a machine is not broken.
Check your own manual before you follow anything here. Temperatures, fill limits and pressure ratings differ from model to model, and the manufacturer’s figures take precedence over anything written on this site. We report what makers publish — an oven’s range in degrees, a cooker’s maximum fill line, whether a part is declared dishwasher-safe — and we never turn those figures into food-safety guidance. Cooking temperatures and holding times for particular foods are set by manufacturers and by your national food safety authority, and this site points you to them rather than restating them.
What readers want to know
Can I ignore the halfway beep?
Yes — nothing stops if you do. It is a reminder, not a pause. What you get instead is the result the reminder exists to prevent: one side browner than the other, or fries crisp on top and soft underneath.
Why does my air fryer keep beeping after it finishes?
Most digital models repeat the end-of-cook beep every so often until the drawer is opened, so food is not left sitting. Pull the drawer out or press the power button to silence it. Some switch to Keep Warm and beep again when that ends.
My air fryer beeps and shows an error code. What does it mean?
Usually a sensor or overheating fault — the code names which in your manual. Unplug the machine, let it cool fully, check that nothing blocks the vents and that the drawer is seated, then try again. If the code returns, stop using it and contact the maker; do not open the casing.
