A beep partway through a cook — usually at the halfway point — telling you to shake the basket or flip the food so every side meets the moving air. It does not pause the machine; pulling the drawer out does.
What it is
A timed alert built into the cook program. Makers call it a shake reminder, a turn reminder or a flip alert. On many digital air fryers it sounds automatically with certain presets — fries, wings, vegetables — and can be switched on or off for a manual cook.
Why it exists
The heat comes from one element above the food and the air moves in one pattern, so a basket has a hot side and a far side, and the top layer browns first. Shaking or turning moves the pieces round. A machine that beeps to tell you to open it is a machine designed to be opened — see can I open an air fryer while it is cooking.
What to do when it beeps
- Small pieces — fries, nuggets, vegetables: shake the drawer.
- Larger pieces — chicken, chops, fish: flip with tongs.
- Breaded food from scratch: flip gently, or leave it if the coating has not set.
- Food in a dish or a cake: ignore it.

If your air fryer has no reminder
Set a phone timer for half the cook time. That is all the feature does. Dial air fryers and many basic models have no reminder, and cook just as well.
And the related features
Pause when the drawer comes out, a preheat prompt and a finished beep are the other alerts most digital models share — see how to know when an air fryer is preheated and setting up a first air fryer.
Check your own manual before you follow anything here. Temperatures, fill limits and pressure ratings differ from model to model, and the manufacturer’s figures take precedence over anything written on this site. We report what makers publish — an oven’s range in degrees, a cooker’s maximum fill line, whether a part is declared dishwasher-safe — and we never turn those figures into food-safety guidance. Cooking temperatures and holding times for particular foods are set by manufacturers and by your national food safety authority, and this site points you to them rather than restating them.
What readers want to know
Do I have to do anything when the shake reminder beeps?
No, but you usually should. The reminder is only a beep; the cook carries on if you ignore it. Pull the drawer, shake small pieces or flip larger ones with tongs, and slide it back — most drawer air fryers pause while the drawer is out and resume when it goes back.
Can I turn off the shake reminder?
On many digital models, yes, by pressing the shake or reminder button before or during a cook, or it switches on only with certain presets. Your manual names the button. It costs nothing to leave on for fries and vegetables.
Does turning food actually matter?
In a well-filled basket, a lot; in a single sparse layer, hardly at all. It moves the pieces so the ones underneath get their turn in the airflow. See should you shake the air fryer basket for which foods to shake, flip or leave.
